    Abstract:

BioMine was an integrated project under the sixth framework programme of research supported by the European Commission. It was dedicated to the evaluation of biohydrometallurgy to improve the exploitation of the European non-ferrous metal resources in a sustainable way.
One kind of the resources considered for bioleaching is lead concentrate. The relevant studies covering pre-treatment and bio oxidation with bacteria of concentrates were done. Using Th. ferrooxidans, L. ferrooxidans, Th. thiooxidans, Thiomonas intermedia and Starkeya novella bacteria, which are found in galena concentrate and optimizing the bioleaching operation, the oxidizing grade of PbS was over 90% when the conditioned concentrate realized the grain size less than 10 microns.
