    Abstract:

Iron and steel industry is important for Ukraine's economy, standing for 40% of the country's export revenue, 27% of industrial production, and directly employing 600000 people. The current state of the iron and steel industry in Ukraine has been presented based on the data on the raw materials, iron and steelmaking industrial facilities, structure of production and export. The environmental impact of the industry has been studied, revealing the fact that it stands for 38% of industrial pollution. Some current challenges, such as insufficient energy efficiency, quality of mineral resources, obsolescence in facilities, overcapacity and export dependency have been analysed. An overview of the ongoing and planned modernization towards competitiveness on the global market has been provided.
