    Abstract:

A possible method of reducing the amount of the scarce and expensive alloying element dysprosium in the alloys used for magnet production is the addition of dysprosium by means of diffusion, from a dysprosium rich surface layer. In this study, the optimum parameters for dysprosium diffusion are discussed. The kinetics indicate that high temperatures of the order of 900oC are more suitable for this process. Models based on the Fick 2nd law are discussed. Some situations admit analytical solutions for the Fick equations.
