3rd Intl. Symp. Surfaces and Interfaces of Sustainable, Advanced Materials (SISAM)

SYMPOSIUM and ROUND TABLE TOPICS

While most advanced materials have long been studied for their bulk properties, their surfaces and interfaces are key to:
a) Fundamental issues: the presence of surfaces and interfaces deviate the targeted (mechanical, optical, electrical, catalytic or thermal) property from its expected value (mechanical hardness, solar cell efficiency, resistance to corrosion, ...);
b) Technological issues including friction, adhesion, corrosion, etc. that in turn determine environmental developments and sustainability in our future. Major investments by our industries go to such issues.

Therefore, surface and interface science has become in recent decades an increasingly important research topic as well as an interdisciplinary field between physics, crystallography, chemistry, biology and material science. The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for new research in the field of surfaces and interfaces and to improve the connection of this still upcoming area in materials science to the Materials Research community, both in academia and industry. Due to the strong impact that surface and interface sciences have in terms of sustainable industrial progress, applications – potential or realized - will be also considered in this symposium. More precisely, the symposium will cover, but is not limited to, the following topics:
  • Formation, preparation and stability of surfaces, interfaces, and grain boundaries,
  • Characterization of surfaces, interfaces and grain boundaries of metals, alloys, oxides and semi-conductors,
  • Solid-liquid interfaces, including biological surfaces and interfaces,
  • Surfaces, interfaces and grain boundaries of nano-objects and nano-particles,
  • Architectured and nanostructured materials
  • Thin films and coatings,
  • Supported nano-objects,
  • Advanced microscopies of surfaces and interfaces (Transmission electron microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy)
  • Experimentals and instrumentation,
  • Theoretical tools, models, codes.

Selected keywords are as follows:
  • Atomic and electronic structures of surfaces and at interfaces,
  • Surface reactivity, catalysis, oxidation and corrosion,
  • Surfaces and interfaces for energy applications
  • Molecules on surfaces, self-assembly, templates,
  • Wetting, adhesion,
  • Friction at atomic scale,
  • Experimental and theoretical approaches.
