Short Bio:
Dominique CHATAIN is Senior Scientist at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS). She works at the Interdisciplinary Center of Nanoscience of Marseille (CINaM), a joined laboratory of CNRS and Aix-Marseille University.
She received an Engineer's Degree in Metallurgy in 1979, and was awarded a Ph.D. in Physics and Materials Science in 1983, from the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble.
She was hired as a CNRS scientific researcher in 1981 in a Materials Science and Engineering laboratory at the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble. She developed her research in an interdisciplinary manner by merging physical and chemical views of interfaces and wetting phenomena. In 1991, she moved to the University of Aix-Marseille to a CNRS laboratory with a focus on Crystal Growth research. There she discovered the nanoworld, and merged her expertise in chemistry and thermodynamics with surface physics. In 2007, the laboratory, which had broadened its scope to include topics in interdisciplinary Materials Science, was reorganized into five departments. Following this reorganization, she led the department of nanomaterials and reactivity for 4 years, and then she served at the CNRS Board for Materials Science in Paris from 20122016.
Dominique Chatain's research has focused on wetting and interfaces of metals on metallic solids and ceramics. Her interests have included: Physical and Chemical Wetting; Structural, Chemical and Energetic Properties of Surfaces and Interfaces; Wetting Transitions; Thermodynamics of Interfaces of Metals and Ceramics; Multiscale (Nano-Meso-Macro-scales) Characterization of Interfaces; Nano/Submicron Particles at interfaces and their Impact on Properties.
These basic topics are related to the understanding of applied problems such as capillarity phenomena (on Earth and in micro-gravity conditions), brazing or processing of materials with large specific interfaces (composite, nano- materials, ...), improvement of materials during service (interface engineering).
Since CNRS appointments provide a great deal of freedom, she has spent a total of about 4 years out of her laboratory for extended visits to other institutions, mainly in the United States.
Her research activities and achievements were highlighted by the Silver Medal of CNRS for impacting contribution in the field materials science (2010), the Lgion d'Honneur of the French government (2012) and a Lady Davis Fellowship from the TECHNION (2014).
She co-authored more than 120 publications in peer reviewed journals. She contributes to the interdisciplinary education of young scientists in Interface Science through EU contracts, lectures and reviews. She delivered more than 230 contributions to national and international conferences including 80 invited talks. She is the leader of an international brainstorming group on interfaces since 2000. She was chair and co-chair of more than 25 international conferences which aims at promoting basic science on interfaces in inorganic materials. She is an active member of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and the Materials Research Society (MRS).
