Short Bio:

Michael Stoukides got his Chemical Engineering Diploma from NTUA, Athens in 1978 and his PhD from MIT in 1982. He then joined the Chemical Engineering Department at Tufts University as an Assistant Professor. In 1988, he was promoted to Associate Professor. In 1993, he moved to Thessaloniki, Greece where he is currently a professor at the Chemical Engineering Department of Aristotle University and also a Senior Researcher at the Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute. His research involves heterogeneous catalysis and solid state electrochemistry. He is the author of 98 refereed journal publications, 3 book chapters, 32 refereed conference proceedings and 3 patents (3500 Google Scholar citations, 34 Google Scholar h-index). In 1998, he published a paper on ΝΗ3 synthesis at atmospheric pressure (Science, 282, 95). This paper was the first report of an electrochemical approach that bypasses the high pressure requirement and allows operation at elevated temperatures where higher reaction rates can be obtained. Since then, in addition to his group, groups worldwide have focused on this subject and a new research area has been established, named Solid State Ammonia Synthesis.
