Short Bio:

Helmi Attia, PhD, FASME, FCIRP, FSME Helmi Attia is Principal Research Officer and former manager of advanced material removal processes, aerospace manufacturing, National Research Council Canada (NRC), and adjunct professor of Mechanical Engineering, McGill University. Before joining the NRC in 2002, Attia was principal research engineer, Ontario Hydro Technologies, and manager of fabrication technology, Spar Aerospace Technology Ltd. He has also been adjunct professor of mechanical engineering with Concordia and McMaster Universities, Canada (1980-2005). Helmi is professional engineer of Ontario, and Fellow of the College International pour la Recherche en Productique (FCIRP), Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (FASME) and Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (FSME). He is the recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) and the ASME Blackall Machine Tools and Gage Award (1989). He is the recipient of numerous recognitions from ASME and ASTM for being the principal organizer of several symposia, and principal editor of books and bound volumes, related to manufacturing and tribology. He is on the editorial board of a number of international journals (re: machining). He served as the chairman of the ASTM Task Group on Fretting Fatigue, and liaison officer of the ASME Production Engineering and Tribology Divisions (1990-96). To his credit, Helmi has authored/coauthored more than 240 papers in archival journals and refereed conference proceedings, and more than 130 technical research reports.
