Short Bio:

Paulo Santos Assis; Born in Rio Espera, Brazil, 18/03/1953 Metallurgical Engineer; M.Sc, Dr-Ing. He holds a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1975), a Gold Medal “Alcindo Vieira Prize”, a Master's Degree in Metallurgical and Mining Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1978) and a PhD in Metallurgy from Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule / Aachen (1991). He worked as a researcher at Acesita (now APERAM) from 1975 to 1984, as researcher and Head of Technical Steel Service at Mannesmann (now Vallourec) from 1984 to 1993. He collaborated at the Federal Fluminense University, as Visiting Professor, in Volta Redonda between 1993 and 1995 in the implementation of the Steel Excellence program through of his graduate program in metallurgy. He was advisor to CA-TEC: Engineering and Architecture Chamber of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Minas Gerais between 2001 and 2005 and Director of the Minas Gerais regional of the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy and Materials from 1996 to 2001. He was awarded three times in the Student Contest in the USA in 2009 in St Louis for the third best contribution in this section and in 2011 in Indianapolis for the second best contribution also in the same section and in 2014 in Indianapolis for the third best contribution in the area of biomass. He has coordinated more than 60 research and development projects and presented more than 240 technical contributions to national and international seminars, national and international indexed journals. He has been awarded six times in papers presented by his excellency in Brazil, respectively in 1995, 1996, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017, for papers; in the area of iron ore, blast furnace, energy, innovation and the environment. He has been a Full Professor at the Federal University of Ouro Preto since 1994, Honorary Professor at Hebei Technology University, Tangshan (China). Permanent Professor of REDEMAT (UEMG / UFOP) since 1996, besides being a researcher in Energy, Iron and Steel Manufacturing, Environment and Quality. Researcher at CNPq. He has experience in the area of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy, with emphasis on Extractive Metallurgy, working mainly in the following topics: steel industry: reduction and refining, injection of pulverized materials, development of new materials, environment, projects for quality improvement and increase productivity. Member of the board of EcoEnviroX. Reviewer of Technology in Metallurgy, Materials and MIneração Journal. Associate Editor of REM. Ad-hoc advisor at USP: Escola Politécnica. Coordinator of the Nucleus of Steel, Energy and Environment of the School of Mines of UFOP. Director of ABM: Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Mining and Materials, 2013. Member of the Board of ABM, 2015 and 2017. President of the board of REDEMAT (2013-2017). Expert assistant in legal and administrative processes of the state and the federal government, in its area of competence. Participated in teacher selection competitions of USP, UFRGS, UFOP and CEFET-MG, University in Australia and in India (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore). Status: January 2019.
