This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Dr. Cristovam Paes de Oliveira, a very well-known professional with deep impact in sustainable minerals and metals processing.

Professor Cristovam Paes de Oliveira has been president of the Gorceix Foundation since October 2001. In 2015, he became Executive President, in accordance with changes statutory. He also serves as President of the FG Board of Directors.

He was born in Hermílo Alves, district of Carandaí, Minas Gerais, on 02/27/1946.

In 1977 he received his doctorate in Physical Sciences from the University of Paris XI (Paris-South), France, where he defended the thesis on the topic: “Analysis by autoradiography of tritium and by electron microscopy of the role of metalloid impurities on hydrogen trapping and cracking in hydrogenated Fe-Cr and Fe-Ni-Cr alloys” guided by prof. Paul Lacombe.

He has held the following positions:

From 1980 to 1988 - Director of the Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto.
From 1988 to 1992 - Rector of the Federal University of Ouro Preto.
From 1996 to 2001 - Coordinator of the Master's and Doctorate Program in Engineering

Materials from REDEMAT - Thematic Network in Materials Engineering. He is currently President of the FG Board of Directors and visiting professor at REDEMAT (specialization, master's degree and doctorate), where he teaches "Thermal Treatments of Metals", "Research Projects" and also supervises and/or co-supervises dissertations and theses.

Tributes and honors
  • 1979 - Special Tribute from the Metallurgical Engineering Course at the Escola de Minas/UFOP, repeated in the years: 1991; 1993; 1995; 1996; 1998; 1999; 2000; 2001/1; 2002/1; 2002/2.
  • 1980 - Recognition by the graduates of the Engineering Courses at the Escola de Minas/UFOP.
  • 1984 – Gold Medal from the CONFEA-CREA/MG System
  • 1989 – Member of honor – Société Française de Metallurgie et de Matériaux.
  • 1989 – Medal of Honor of the Inconfidência Mineira – Government of the State of Minas Gerais.
  • 1989 - Commemorative Medal for the day of the State of Minas Gerais, City Hall of Minas Gerais Mariana/MG.
  • 1989 - Masonic Medal of Inconfidência Mineira – Gold Degree - Grande Oriente de Minas General.
  • 1989 - Aleijadinho Medal, by the Municipal Foundation of Ouro Preto/MG.
  • 1991 - Tribute from the Methodist University of Piracicaba/SP.
  • 1992 – Gorceix School Medal of Minas/UFOP.
  • 1993 – Honorary Member – of the Council of Rectors of Brazilian Universities, Council of Rectors (CRUB).

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A round table discussion open to everyone interested will be organized during the symposium. This will allow high level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to discuss and debate freely, without reservations, all topics of this symposium and identify possible research and development pathways towards a future industry with increased sustainability.
