This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Matthew M Nolan, attorney at law. Matthew focuses on international trade and investment law, trade agreement negotiations and disputes, unfair trade practices investigations, and relate international issues involving private sector and government international clients.
Matthew Nolan was born in Washington DC. He received a Bachelors degree in economics and political science from Tufts University, a Masters degree in international affairs and economics from the Elliot School of International Affairs of the George Washington University, and his juris doctor degree from Georgetown University Law School, Washington, DC.
In 1986, shortly after passing the bar, Nolan joined the law firm of Fulbright and Jaworski where he established an international practice with clients in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and other countries. Among other notable matters, Mr Nolan advised the Government of Canada during the North America Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
In 1998, Mr. Nolan moved his practice to the firm of Miller and Chevalier, Chartered, where he chaired the International Department from 1999-2005. During that period he managed a group of 40 professionals, and undertook several major client assignment, including representing Weyerhaeuser Company in the softwood lumber trade dispute with the United States, advising South African and Austrian companies In trade disputes involving steel products, and completed several anticorruption investigations for companies in the energy space.
In 2006, Mr. Nolan moved to his current firm, Arent Fox, LLP where he chaired the international trade practice from 2008-2015. During that period he represented the Government of Mexico in trade disputes and negotiations involving the united States and other countries, advised the Korean Government on issues related to the Korean US Free Trade Agreement, represented the Government of Argentina in successfully challenging the United States in a World Trade Organization dispute over beef, and represented several Canadian, Turkish, and Austrian clients in trade remedies actions. He has served on the Board of Advisors of the Elliot School of International Affairs (2001-2015) and the Board of the Canadian American Business Council.
He has spoken extensively on trade issues in a variety contexts, and written about trade issues for over 20 years.
Mr. Nolan has also chaired a non-profit, World Partnerships, for many years. World Partnership’s mission is to break through national barriers by bringing together young emerging leaders in various professions (journalism, medical, antiterrorism, etc.) to engage, collaborate and find common themes of engagement. By promoting dialogue and education across national boundaries in a non-confrontational setting, World Partnerships hopes to enhance world understanding, decrease tension and conflict, and improve communications among emerging world leaders.

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A round table discussion open to everyone interested will be organized at a specific date and time during the symposium. It will be a platform for high level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to freely discuss and debate all topics of this symposium, and identify positive and efficient pathways towards sustainability in industrial practices, technologies, and research.
Dr. Florian Kongoli holds 3 degrees: a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science/University of Montreal, Canada and a Doctor of Science Degree/Tohoku University, Japan. Since 1996 he is CEO of FLOGEN Technologies Inc., (www.flogen.com) a Sustainable High Tech applied research institute incorporated in Canada and USA that today have offices and representations in more than 15 Countries around the world while carrying out high tech projects in more than 40 countries. Since 2007 he is Chairman of FLOGEN STAR OUTREACH (www.flogen.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to (1) achieving sustainability through science and technology, (2) raising the profile of science and engineering in the society and (3) properly honoring scientists and engineers. Since 2003 Dr Kongoli has been President of the Organizing Committee of the Sustainable Industrial Processing Summits (SIPS) held every year in several countries around the world with an average participation of 500 authors from academia, industry, government and the entrepreneurship world representing an average of 80 countries. Dr Kongoli has about 25 years of rich scientific and applied technology experience through direct involvement in numerous invited engagements in all continents. He has worked with more than 60 well-known chemical and metallurgical companies and several well-known universities around the world. Dr. Kongoli is has published 77 books and about 190 scientific articles in the last 10 years and has delivered in numerous countries about 200plenary, keynote and invited presentations as well as articles, technical reports and research presentations. He has served in many leadership positions in national and international organizations. Dr. Kongoli is an Elected Member of Euro Mediterranean Academy of Arts and Sciences (EMAAS) and member of the Industrial Achievement Award Committee of International Federation of Automatic Control. In 2017 he was Awarded “The Environmental Tech CEO of the year 2017” by CEO-Monthly magazine in UK and in 2019 was given the official title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro by a special Legislative Decree voted unanimously by the Rio de Janeiro City Council. He is Editorial Board member of several International Journals. He has participated in business and government delegations in numerous countries accompanying Prime Ministers, Minister and other government officials. Malcolm McNeil received an Arts Degree from Los Angeles city College, a Bachelor degree in management and administration from Antioch University and his juris doctor degree from Loyola Law school, Los Angeles. After passing the bar, McNeil opened his own law office focused on commercial matters and regulatory offenses matters brought by state and federal agencies. McNeil has also been the chair of the international section of the Los Angeles county bar association. He has held a variety of positions with the American Bar Association including the chair of the China committee, vice chair of the Asia-Pacific committee, Vice chair of the international mediation committee, and liaison between the bar associations. McNeil currently practices law as the international co-leader of the Arent Fox law firm. He is licensed to practice law in California and Washington DC. He is also admitted to the United States District Court for the northern, eastern, Central and Southern District of California, to the US Court of Appeals for the fifth and ninth circuit’s; the United States court of international trade (CIT) and the United States Supreme Court. McNeil has been an adjunct professor for the University of Laverne School of Law. Malcolm’s practice has included representation of clients in most forums, including a range of administrative forums, statewide and nationally. Known for his leadership and accomplishments, particularly for clients with business interests in China, Malcolm is a panel member on the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration in the Beijing International Arbitration Commission. Malcolm also serves as the co-chair of Arent Fox's International Group.
Yoshihisa Hayakawa serves as a professor of law at Rikkyo University, Tokyo. He also teaches and researches in a number of foreign universities including Columbia University, Cornell University, QM College of University of London and Australian National University. He also serves as a partner at Uryu & Itoga, Tokyo. He serves as a counsel in many cases of transnational litigation and international commercial arbitration as well as serving as an arbitrator in many arbitration cases. He also serves as a representative from Japan for a number of inter-governmental organizations including UNCITRAL, APEC and Hague Conference on PIL. And he serves as President of Japan National Committee of UIA, Japanese Member for Commission on Arbitration and ADR of ICC and Japanese Member of Users Council of SIAC.
