This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work, career, and lifetime achievements of Dr. Evandro Carvalho, a very well-known professional with deep impact in technological innovations in economy and commerce for sustainable development.

Evandro Menezes de Carvalho (高文勇) is a Brazilian scholar of international law and a leading international authority on China–Brazil relations, Chinese governance, and global governance from a Global South perspective. His work stands at the intersection of law, international relations, and civilizational dialogue, contributing to a deeper understanding of China’s role in the transformation of the contemporary international order.

He currently serves as Professor Coordinator at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), while on leave from his position as Associate Professor of International Law at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), Brazil, where he is also a founding member of the Center for BRICS Countries Studies. Over nearly two decades at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV Law School in Rio de Janeiro), he played a pivotal role in shaping legal education in Brazil, serving as Coordinator of the Graduate Law Program and as Vice-Dean.

Professor Carvalho has developed a distinguished academic trajectory with extensive institutional engagement in China. He is a Wutong Chair Professor at the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and has held senior academic appointments at leading Chinese institutions, including Peking University, Fudan University, and Shanghai University. His experience reflects a rare combination of scholarly excellence and direct participation in China’s academic and policy environments.

His research focuses on Chinese legal and political institutions, the theory and practice of Chinese modernization, BRICS cooperation, and the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as broader questions concerning the evolution of global governance. Through his work, he has contributed to bridging intellectual traditions between China and Latin America, fostering dialogue and cooperation across regions.

Professor Carvalho is the recipient of major international distinctions, including the Chinese Government Friendship Award (2023), the highest honor conferred by the Chinese government to foreign experts, and the World Sinology Outstanding Achievement Award (2025). He was also awarded the Cross of Merit of Fraternal Brazil-China Integration by the Brazilian National Congress.

He is the author of the book “China: Tradição e Modernidade na Governança do País” (China: Tradition and Modernity in the Country’s Governance) (2024), which reached the top of Amazon’s rankings in its category, and co-editor of “Arbitration and Mediation in Brazil and China” (2022). In addition, he serves as Chief Executive Editor of China Hoje, the Brazilian edition of China Today magazine, published by China International Communication Group (CICG).

A founding member of the World Association of China Studies (WACS) and the Brazilian Network of Chinese Studies (RBChina), Professor Carvalho has also served as President of the Brazilian Law Teaching Association (ABEDi). He actively participates in international academic and policy dialogues, contributing to the development of new frameworks for cooperation between China, Brazil, and the broader Global South. Professor Carvalho’s career reflects a sustained commitment to intellectual exchange, institutional cooperation, and the construction of new paradigms for global governance in the 21st century.
