Bio | CV | Publications
This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Dr. Paulo Pellanda, a very well-known professional with deep impact in sustainable energy production.

This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. Paulo César Pellanda, a Brazilian electrical engineer, researcher, academic leader, and retired Colonel Military Engineer of the Brazilian Army whose career has had significant impact on sustainable energy production, power-system dynamics and protection, advanced control, and the resilience of critical energy infrastructure. He is currently Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor at the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he also coordinates the graduate specialization program in Power Systems Protection, developed in cooperation with the Brazilian National System Operator, and manages the Cybersecurity Laboratory for Cyber-Physical Systems (LaSC).

Prof. Pellanda holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Automatic Control from ISAE-SUPAERO, France. His doctoral work received the CNRS Best Thesis Award in Automatic Control, and he is a Full Member of the Brazilian National Academy of Engineering. Over more than three decades, he has combined teaching, research, graduate education leadership, engineering practice, and strategic project coordination in fields related to electrical engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and technological innovation. His scientific work lies at the intersection of sustainable energy systems, electric power systems, advanced control, critical infrastructure cybersecurity, innovation management, and building information modeling.

Among his most important contributions to sustainable energy production are his early engineering activities in the Brazilian Amazon, where he participated in feasibility studies and implementation efforts involving alternative and renewable energy sources for isolated locations, including solar photovoltaic and hydropower solutions for military bases and Indigenous communities. He also contributed, within the Calha Norte Program, to the construction of five micro-hydroelectric plants in frontier regions. In cooperation with Itaipu Binacional and CEPEL, he coordinated field tests on generators at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, contributing to an innovative methodology for evaluating control performance in large multi-generator plants. His broader technical work has also addressed power-system stability, protection and control, battery energy storage systems with grid-forming control, harmonic filter protection for wind farms, and the cybersecurity of electric power systems and other critical infrastructures.

Prof. Pellanda’s broader professional and scientific trajectory also includes contributions to energy efficiency, water use, and sustainability in thermal power systems, as well as digital technologies for sustainable infrastructure lifecycle management through Building Information Modeling (BIM) and related integrative approaches. His recent scholarly work has further addressed digital social innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals and sustainable business model innovation, reinforcing the multidisciplinary and forward-looking character of his career. Combining academic achievement, technological innovation, and practical engineering leadership, Prof. Pellanda has contributed in a sustained manner to the advancement of sustainable energy production, infrastructure reliability, and science-based technological development in Brazil.

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A round table discussion open to everyone interested will be organized during the symposium. This will allow high level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to discuss and debate freely, without reservations, all topics of this symposium and identify possible research and development pathways towards a future industry with increased sustainability.

You are cordially invited to actively participate in this symposium by submitting and presenting a paper, or by attending the round table. We look forward to meeting you at this world class symposium.
