7th Intl. Symp. on Sustainable Carbon and Biocoke and their Industrial Application

    Carbon

    SYMPOSIUM and ROUND TABLE TOPICS

Carbon in the form of coal and coke is still a major part of a various heavy mineral and metal extraction industries such as iron and steel making as well as various non-ferrous extraction processes. It is also still used in producing energy and electricity in the world today. However, the current byproducts of coal combustion such as CO2 have a profound effect on the climate change and global warming. As such, it is indispensable to develop and use new sustainable technologies that
    (1) Reduce or eliminate the CO2 discharge in atmosphere
    (2) Capture and processing CO2 from combustion processes to beneficial products
    (3) Develop/use carbon-free but economically viable new technologies

This symposium will tackle the three above mentioned goals concentrating specifically but not exclusively on the following four important topics:

    (1) Reducing and/or eliminating the CO2 discharge in atmosphere in metal extraction processes
Biocoke as Green Carbon Source in Metal Production covering the following topics:
    • Characteristics of Carbon carriers
    • Requirements on biocoke for metallurgy
    • Challenges on new carbon carriers
    • Reaction Kinetics
    • Biocoke as reducing agent
    • Process concepts based on biocoke
    • Optimization of biocoke quality
    • Sources and availability
    • Industrial implementation
    • Utilization of pyrolysis by-products (biogas)

    (2) Reducing and/or eliminating the CO2 discharge from combustion processes
    • New revolutionary combustions methods
    • Chemically washing minerals and impurities from the coal
    • Gasification and latest Coal Gasification Technologies
    • Treating flue gases to remove pollutants to increasingly stringent levels and at higher efficiency
    • Carbon capture and storage (capture the carbon dioxide from the flue gas etc.)
    • Dewatering lower rank coals (brown coals) to improve the calorific value and efficiency in energy and electricity production etc.
    • The Role of High Efficient Coal Combustion based Power Generation Technologies in the Transition Period
    • Alternative Technologies to Utilize Coal without causing GHG's

    (3) Capturing and processing CO2 from combustion processes to beneficial products
    • Pre-combustion capture
    • Post-combustion capture
    • Oxy-fuel combustion
    • Other captures and processing methods and technologies

    (4) Develop/use carbon-free but economically viable new technologies
