Short Bio:

Norman O. Lotter is President and Consulting Engineer of Flowsheets Metallurgical Consulting Inc. based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He has 44 years of industrial experience in mineral processing operations and their technical support, including retrofits to existing operations for improved performance, and greenfield projects. He obtained his B.Sc. in pure and applied science at the University of Natal, South Africa, and his M.Sc. in chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. His doctorate in metallurgical engineering was awarded by McGill University in Montréal, Canada. He holds licences as a professional engineer with ECSA in South Africa and the PEO in Ontario, and is a chartered engineer with the IMMM, London, England. He is a fellow of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and of the IMMM, and was designated as a Consulting Engineer by the PEO in 2014. He spent 20 years of his career with Johannesburg Consolidate Investments Ltd., South Africa, focussing on improved mineral processing practice for the platinum orebodies of Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited, where he developed High Confidence Flotation Testing. He moved to Canada in 1997 to join Falconbridge Ltd , where he was appointed to lead the development and training of a new hybrid discipline team in Process Mineralogy for advanced flowsheet development, using geologists, mineral processors, samplers and statisticians. He led this team through two generations of innovation and project work that delivered significant improvements to the older and the new Falconbridge flowsheets. In 2010, he was awarded Distinguished Lecturer by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, in recognition of his contributions to the mineral processing profession by way of improved practices in sampling, flotation testing and plant surveying towards better flowsheet development. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Minerals Engineering journal, and has published a total of 38 papers, and has written several chapters in reference books for the profession.
