Bostjan Markoli

Short Bio:

Bostjan Markoli received his PhD in metallurgy and materials in 2000. He is full professor of physical metallurgy and currently Chair for Metallography at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Main research focus is on the development and characterization of alloys with targeted properties. Among investigated alloys are those for structural applications, magnetic and magnetocaloric alloys, quasicrystalline alloys and MM composites. During the 90´s he was working on characterization on new Al-based alloys for Audi A6 Spaceframe and alloys for the AIRBUS A320. At the turn of the century he worked on characterization of intermetallics in Al-based alloys and started his involvement in quasicrystals. In 2010 he was visiting scientist at the Norwegian National University of Technology at Trondheim, working on investigation of deformation mechanisms in metastable quasicrystals. As a Fulbright scholar he worked as a visiting scientist in Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, USA. The focus was once more on the characterization of deformation mechanisms in metastable quasicrystals from Al-Mn-Cu-Be system using in-situ nano-tensile and nano-compression tests. His research h team is currently developing a variety of new metal matrix-quasicrystal composites (MMQC) based on Al-Mn-system. He has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
