Abstract:

Japanese steel maker (four blast furnace steel makers and one engineering company) have been executed "Development of technologies for environmentally harmonized steelmaking process, 'COURSE50' "(CO2 Ultimate Reduction in Steelmaking process by innovative technology for Cool Earth 50) since February 2008. This project is a national project commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The target of COURSE50 is a mitigation of approximately 30% in CO2 emissions in the integrated steel plant. Two technologies are investigated, which are a) Reduction of iron ore by using hydrogen and hydrocarbon-containing coke oven gas additionally to curb CO2 emissions from blast furnaces, and b) Separation and recovery of CO2 from blast furnace gas with chemical absorption method and physical adsorption method by effective utilization of unused waste heat in steel works. In case of a) the main task is conservation of heat balances of local parts and whole of blast furnaces. In case of b) the main task is how to improve the energy consumption of chemical absorption and physical adsorption, not only the improvement of agents and materials but also the process flow.
