1st Intl. Symp. on Multifunctional and Smart Materials, Systems and Structures for Sustainability (MSMSSS)

Sustainable development is achieved when the present needs and challenges are met without placing in jeopardy the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and challenges. The technological progress achieved in the last 60 years has been tremendous and the rate of this technological development is expect to continue increasing. Because most of our resources are limited, this means that we need to achieve more with less. The effective development of multifunctional and smart materials, systems and structures has the potential to contribute significantly to meeting these goals. This symposium focuses on the development of materials, systems and structures that are designed to accomplish multi-performance and multi-function objectives in a fully integrated system. It includes more conventional material systems such as composite materials, hybrid materials, nanomaterials and smart materials, systems and structures for sustainability. In composites materials the design may address simultaneously some of several structural properties such as strength, stiffness, fracture toughness and damping. In hybrid materials, in addition or exclusive to a combination of structural properties, the design may include other non-structural properties and functions such as thermal and electrical conductivity, energy absorption and electromagnetic properties. In nanomaterials and smart materials, in addition or exclusive to the above properties others such as optical, shape memory effects, sensing and actuation, electromagnetic interference shielding, radiation shielding, energy harvest and storage, self-healing and health monitoring capabilities, morphing and recyclability may be system designed. In addition, the materials systems may combine the mimicking of nature bio-structures and biomedical properties such as bio-degradability and may include nanoparticles for dispensing drugs and diagnostics. This integrated system design approach may lead to enhanced properties and functions at different size scales and to innovative applications which are also the focus of this symposium. The symposium is designed to be multidisciplinary and multidomain in order to provide an open forum leading to the cross fertilization of ideas and approaches.   • Functional hybrid nanomaterials, nanocomposites and their applications

  • Mimicking of nature bio-materials and bio-structures
  • Nanoparticles for dispensing drugs and diagnostics.
  • Shape memory effect materials, systems and structures
  • Morphing materials, systems and structures
  • Smart materials systems and structures for energy applications
  • Smart materials and scaffold for tissue engineering
  • Smart multifunctional biomaterials and structures
  • Innovative applications of multifunctional materials, systems and structures
  • Bio-inspired morphing structures
  • Smart ultralight-weight materials and structures for unmanned vehicles
  • Morphing unmanned vehicle and aircraft structures
